Having a sense of power and control over our actions and future is known as self-efficacy and is clearly linked to possessing a sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Our programs provide a safe, non-judgmental learning environment for kids to develop self-worth and self-esteem. Through specific horse related exercises our program enhances kids’ ability to achieve the following outcomes in an authentic learning environment:
- Build relationships based on trust, respect, communication, and teamwork
- Make healthy choices and establish boundaries
- Experience unconditional love through safe, healthy, and positive attachments
- Stay present focused and engaged
- Heal Trauma
Aurora Behavioral Health offers group equine therapy integrated within our inpatient and outpatient programs as a part of our holistic approach to healing. Equine Therapy is an evidenced based approach where patients interact with therapy horses in order to reach rehabilitative goals.
Aurora’s Equine Therapy Program is overseen by Angela Schmitt, MA. All Equine Therapy sessions through our programs will be held on-site on a weekly basis. During each session, group participants will be allowed to interact with two horses, brought on our facility site by The Pony Express in Santa Rosa.
Who Should Attend Equine Therapy Sessions?
Equine Therapy may be helpful to anyone. Equine Therapy has been shown to treat and help individuals cope with a variety of behaviors and symptoms, such as:
- Suicidal Tendencies
- Low Self-Esteem
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Development Delays
- Learning Disabilities
- Social Problems
- Behavioral Concerns
- Sedentary Habits
If you, a family member or patient suffer from one or more of the above symptomatic behaviors, Equine Therapy is a treatment consideration.
Benefits of Equine Therapy
Horses cannot hide their feelings. They can serve as an emotional mirror to patients. A professional who oversees the interactions between patient and horse can gain valuable insight from a horse’s reactions to a patient. This allows the professional to better address whatever is ailing the patient.
Equine Group Therapy has been shown to be successful in helping patients improve in the following areas:
- Emotional Awareness
- Stress Tolerance
- Problem-Solving Skills
- Independence and Self-Regard
- Social responsibilities
- Interpersonal relationships
